Scott Leonard is a native of the West Lexington Community.
He first joined the department in July 1980 as a junior firefighter, following family
tradition; his Grandfather was a charter member of the department. Chief
Leonard’s father and brother are former members of the department and his mother
formerly served with the Ladies Auxilary. Prior to becoming Chief in April
1998, he held the ranks of Captain, Assistant Chief, and Deputy Chief. He
maintains the certifications of NC Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations,
and EMT-Paramedic. In addition to being Chief of West Lexington Fire Department,
he is employed full-time with Midway Fire & Rescue as a Captain. Mr. Leonard
credits his achievements to overwhelming support from his wife Christy and daughter
Lauren.
Since becoming Chief in April 1998, he has implemented a daytime contracted employee
program. The program which began in 1999, initially
consisted of one firefighter who worked from
8am – 5pm
Monday through Friday. Over the past two years this program has grown to two
firefighters, seven days a week, from 6am – 5pm. Chief Leonard has also implemented
a Medical response program, which began in 1999. At this time, approximately
50% of our firefighters are Medical Responder or higher certified and assist
Davidson County EMS
on any medical calls in our district, providing early advanced life support through
the use of three LifePak 500 AED’s.
Chief Leonard has also been instrumental in the purchase of a complete set of
Hurst
rescue equipment including airbags.
